So my desktop went blank and started making a steady beeeeeep. I cleaned it out, it worked a couple days before shutting off again. From what I read the motherboard is most likely shot. Is it worth rebuilding or just upgrading to a new one? What’s a good desktop for <1k. Current video card is xfx r7700

See if you can borrow a different Power Supply for awhile and see if the issue continues. Sometimes if the PSU is dying and all parts are not getting the power they need, it can cause weird issues, such as random shutdowns.

It’s 98% chance it’s motherboard or power supply. I’d say a 70/28 split respectively.

Thanks when I got it I had a better video card thrown in and the power supply upgraded to a gs700. Can I put the smaller power supply in? Will it just run slower?

The mother/cpu are @6 years old, about due for an upgrade anyway. Power supply a little over 3.

What CPU do you have? That would be the main deciding factor on whether or not it’s worth it to upgrade.

How many watts is your current PSU? Your replacement should be at least the same or more, especially if you have a good video card. Most modern cards require a MINIMUM of 500 watts. I would recommend 600-650watts depending on your system.

See if you can borrow one from somebody for a day just to see if the issue persists. Power supplies won’t run slower with a smaller wattage unit, if the wattage supplied is too low, the system won’t run at all, or will crash or act oddly (think of it like a high-power-requirement city with a power plant that isn’t up to snuff - the city will suffer rolling brownouts/blackouts).

If your current PSU is 700 watts, it’s probably the right wattage, but if the PSU is dying, it CAN act oddly. No way of knowing if it’s your problem unless you can test.
